People often ask me when they can start prenatal yoga. Since it’s a low-impact practice that considers all aspects of the human experience—physical, mental, and spiritual—it brings so many benefits during pregnancy.
You can start prenatal yoga as early as the first trimester, though some women prefer to wait until the second trimester, once morning sickness eases up and the pregnancy feels a bit more stable.
Studies show that practicing yoga early in pregnancy and continuing throughout each trimester can lower the risk of pregnancy-related complications. This is likely because of the overall stress reduction that comes from a healthy lifestyle and a regular yoga routine.
It’s always a good idea to check in with a healthcare professional before you start, especially if you’re new to yoga. Look for classes designed specifically for pregnant women—they’re tailored to the physical changes and unique needs of pregnancy.
Some instructors in regular yoga studios know how to modify practices for pregnant women, but if you’re new to yoga or have a particular condition, I’d strongly recommend a specialized class with a teacher trained in prenatal yoga.
If you already practice yoga, you might not notice much change in your routine during the first trimester. The main differences will come from pregnancy side effects—like fatigue or nausea. You might still be able to do most of what you did before, but it’s also normal to feel extra tired or a bit queasy. Remember to appreciate everything your body is doing, even if it doesn’t show on the outside, and approach your practice with self-compassion and gentleness.
Your body is creating the miracle of life, and the first trimester is when it needs extra energy for your baby’s development.
In prenatal yoga (like with most physical activities during pregnancy), it’s generally recommended to reduce the intensity to about 75%-80% of what you’d usually do.
Listen to your body—it’s your best guide! You have an innate wisdom within that you’ll be connecting to more deeply in the months ahead.
Wishing you a wonderful pregnancy and a peaceful practice!
